Start your journey into Newfoundland genealogy with the Newfoundland Record Index (NRI).
Search for your ancestors' name across Newfoundland court records, historical correspondence, newspapers, government records, and more!
This database is a searchable index of individuals named in historical records from Newfoundland, Canada. Established in April 2026, the Newfoundland Records Index (NRI) was created to provide researchers, genealogists, historians, and family descendants with a free-to-use centralized repository of references to records that are otherwise difficult to access, scattered across numerous collections, or not available anywhere else online.
Inspired by the highly successful The Ontario Name Index (TONI) in Ontario, Canada and the internationally respected Scottish Indexes website, this project aims to bring together names found in a wide variety of Newfoundland source materials into one easy-to-search location.
Where available, some indexed entries link directly to external digital collections or repositories. In other cases, copies of the original records may be available for order from a genealogist.
- To find specific records, enter a search term in one or more of the column filters and press Enter.
- Users can search the database in the following ways:
- By last name
- By first name
- By location of the record or noted residence of the indexed individual (example: Lewisporte)
- By the record set (example: Placentia Court Records)
- By date of the record
- By notes provided by a genealogist
- Once your search results appear, click the “v” on the left-hand side of the record and you will get the record's full details.
When you find a record you want to order, click “Order Full Record” and follow the instructions.
You do not need a PayPal account to pay. Simply select credit/debit card.
After payment, the requested item will be sent to you by email within 5 business days.
